dr Tomasz Janczak

Tomasz Janczak graduated from the Wrocław Academy of Music in 1995 with a degree in Vocal and Acting. That same year, he made his stage debut in Hanover as Eisenstein in the operetta “Die Fledermaus”. From 1995 to 1996, he was a soloist at the Musical Theatre in Łódź, and then, from 1996 to 2004, he was the principal tenor at the Musical Theatre – Operetta Wrocław. From 2004 to 2014, he was the principal soloist at the Musical Theatre in Lublin, where he sang the leading tenor roles in operas such as “Carmen” by G. Bizet, “The Haunted Manor” by S. Moniuszko, and “La Traviata” by G. Verdi. He was also the principal tenor in all the operettas performed at this theatre.

He has given concerts in many countries in Europe and around the world, including numerous appearances in the USA and Canada. He has also performed at numerous German theatres, singing leading roles in operettas such as “The Gypsy Baron” by J. Strauss and “The Bartered Bride” by B. Smetana. In 2006, he completed postgraduate studies at the Faculty of National Economy at the Wrocław University of Economics, earning the title of “Effective Manager of a Modern Company”. In 2011, he earned the title of theatre director, and in 2013, he received a doctorate in musical arts in the field of vocal performance.

In February 2008, he assumed the position of plenipotentiary of the managing director for artistic affairs at the Musical Theatre in Lublin. Thanks to his initiative and determination, November 2008 saw the first opera super-production in the history of Lublin – “La Traviata” by G. Verdi at the “Globus” Hall, in which he also sang the role of Alfredo Germont. In 2012, he directed with great success the second major opera production – “Nabucco” by G. Verdi, which was seen by over 5,000 spectators at the “Globus” Hall in Lublin.

From 2009 to 2013, he was the artistic director of the Musical Theatre in Lublin. From 2014, he was the artistic director of the Sudeten Philharmonic in Wałbrzych, where he made a name for himself as the originator, organizer, and director of major musical events, including the mega-shows “Die Fledermaus” and “The Gypsy Baron” by J. Strauss, as well as the concert “Two Elements” with Aleksandra Kurzak and Krzysztof Cugowski, held at the Centennial Hall in Wrocław.

From 2016 to 2023, he was the managing and artistic director of the Lower Silesian Philharmonic in Jelenia Góra. In his first artistic season, he created the Karkonosze Opera Festival. The first edition of the festival saw the hugely successful open-air performance of “The Haunted Manor” by S. Moniuszko at the Municipal Stadium in Jelenia Góra, with an audience of over 2,000. The performance was so successful that it was repeated later that year at the PGE Turów Arena in Zgorzelec and a year later at the RCS Arena in Lublin. The second edition of the festival featured a performance of “Carmen” by G. Bizet at the Lower Silesian Philharmonic in Jelenia Góra, in which Tomasz Janczak sang the role of Don Jose and was also responsible for the staging and direction. In 2019, as part of the third edition of the Karkonosze Opera Festival, he directed the opera spectacle “Nabucco” by G. Verdi, in which he also sang the role of Ismael. This event, staged by the Lower Silesian Philharmonic at the PGE Turów Arena in Zgorzelec, met with enthusiastic reception from an international audience. At the initiative of Tomasz Janczak, the Lower Silesian Philharmonic was one of the first in the world and the only one in Poland to launch the “Philharmonic with Home Delivery” series of concerts in March 2020. This resulted in 12 films that were watched by over 1.2 million music lovers. In 2020, as part of the fourth edition of the Karkonosze Opera Festival, he directed “La Traviata”, which was broadcast live on the Internet. The fifth edition of the Karkonosze Opera Festival featured “The Gypsy Baron” by J. Strauss, and the sixth, “Carmen” by G. Bizet. He directed, staged, and produced both productions at the PGE Turów Arena in Zgorzelec, singing the leading roles. The performances were a great success and were enthusiastically received by the large international audience.

Tomasz Janczak has been an active concert performer in Poland and abroad for many years. In October 2019, he participated in the concert “The Very Best of Moniuszko” organized by the Celebrity Symphony Orchestra in Toronto. In the 2023/2024 artistic season, he was a soloist at New Year’s Eve and New Year’s concerts in Germany as part of a concert tour with the Sorbian National Ensemble.

Since 2023, he has been the director of the Wrocław Opera. Thanks to his work, the first joint opera production with the Wrocław Academy of Music was realized, and in May 2024, the biggest event in years – “Tosca” with a star cast: Aleksandra Kurzak and Roberto Alagna in the leading roles.
