Athos Castellan

Athos Castellan is a professor of trombone at the “B. Marcello” Conservatory in Venice and served as the bass trombonist in the Orchestra of the Teatro “La Fenice” in Venice from 2003 to 2022. 

After graduating from the Conservatory of Udine with top honors, he specialized in bass trombone with G. Grandi (Teatro alla Scala) and furthered his studies with D. Wick (former London Symphony Orchestra), J. Friedman (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), E. Kleinhammer (former CSO), M. Mulcahy (CSO), C. Vernon (CSO), and R. Martin (NorthWestern University). 

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with important Italian and international musical institutions, including the Bayerische Staatsoper (Germany), the Orchestra of the Suisse Romande (Switzerland), the Philharmonic Orchestra “A. Toscanini”, the Orchestra of the Swiss Italian Television and Radio (Switzerland), the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester, performing under the direction of conductors such as C. Abbado, L. Maazel, R. Muti, K. Masur, M.-W. Chung, G. Sinopoli, V. Gergiev, Y. Temirkanov, G. Pretre, D. Gatti, A. Pappano, H. Bloomstedt, J. V. Zweden, J. Tate, M. Rostropovich, E. Inbal, M. Viotti. 

He is currently regularly invited to collaborate with the Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, Teatro alla Scala, the National Orchestra of RAI, and the Orchestra “Mozart”. With some of these orchestras, he has made television, radio, and record recordings for major labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, RS, RAI, TDK, ORF, Forlane, and Musicum. 

As a soloist, he has appeared on various occasions including at the “Alessi Seminar of Europe” and the “Primiero Brass Festival”. He has premiered several national performances such as Derek Bourgeois’s “Double Concerto for Bass Trombone, Trumpet, and Wind Orchestra”, E. Ewazen’s “Concerto for Bass Trombone and Wind Orchestra”, and F. Hidas’s “Rhapsody”. 

He is a member of the “Venice Slide Quartet” as well as one of the founders and partners of “Slide & friends”. 

He was a member of the Jazz Orchestra of F.V.G. and has collaborated with the Big Band Città di Udine and the Abbey Town Jazz Orchestra.
